Series 1 - David
and Goliath
David,
a shepherd boy of around 12 years of age, strong enough to protect his
flock yet untrained in warfare, stands posed and ready to take on the
screaming giant.
This young boy with beautiful eyes and a ruddy complexion and hair
stood out among the other Israelite boys of his age. David protected
his flock against lions and bears and rescued his many sheep from the
mouths of these beasts. However, young and inexperienced, David was
untrained in warfare. He carried no weapons except for his shepherd's
staff and sling. Armed solely with his sling and five smooth stones,
this future King of the Israelites would soon meet the challenge of
his young life.
Taken directly from the passage in 1 Samuel, Goliath's armor and
accessories conjure up an ancient civilization, proud of its iron
working ability, ready to annihilate a smaller Israelite army.
A champion Philistine from the city of Gath, he stood 9 feet 9 inches
tall. Goliath was a hardened warrior who wore a bronze helmet and was
clothed in scaled armor, in the tradition of the snake. His coat of
bronze weighed 125 pounds and bronze shin guards called greaves
protected his legs. He carried a spear that had a fifteen-pound point
and strapped a bronze javelin across his back. This nine foot giant
who taunted the Israelite army with confidence and power was eager and
ready to annihilate this seemingly unsophisticated culture.
